Relive Danny Crainie’s stunning wondergoal from 1993
Thirty years ago today, Danny Crainie scored an unforgettable goal for Kilmarnock in their away match against Partick Thistle.
Under Tommy Burns, Kilmarnock had secured promotion the previous season, but life in the top flight proved challenging. The team only managed to retain their Premier Division status on the final day, drawing 0-0 with Hibernian and avoiding relegation, as the league was reduced from 12 to 10 teams.
When the final points were counted, Crainie’s stunning goal at Firhill proved to be absolutely crucial in securing Kilmarnock’s top-tier survival.
Danny Crainie is most famously associated with Celtic, despite playing just 32 matches for the club. His standout moment came during the 1981/82 season when, as Charlie Nicholas and George McCluskey both suffered leg breaks, Crainie seized the opportunity to shine.
A Celtic fan from Kilsyth, Crainie’s journey to the first team couldn’t have been scripted better. He made his debut as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Partick Thistle before scoring a hat-trick in an away win over the same team, helping secure the title.
The pinnacle of his Celtic career came in his Glasgow Derby debut, where he scored in the opening minute, and Celtic won 2-1 with Tom McAdam alongside him in attack.
Crainie left Celtic in 1983 for a move to Wolves, where he played under Tommy Docherty. During a later stint in Australia, he played alongside a young Ange Postecoglou.
