Steelers 7-Round Mock Draft: Strengthening the Trenches

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a significant offseason of player acquisitions as they aim to transition from a playoff team to a legitimate title contender. There are plenty of gaps to address, particularly on the offensive line and defensive front. With Cam Heyward aging and some 2023 contributors, like Larry Ogunjobi, likely moving on, the 2024 NFL Draft presents a great opportunity. This year’s class is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory, especially at positions where the Steelers need immediate improvement. Let’s dive into my first 7-round mock draft of the season, with a few notes to consider:

  1. This isn’t necessarily what I would do if I were making the picks.
  2. It’s a projection of the direction I believe the Steelers will lean in their draft strategy.

ROUND 1: 20TH OVERALL

OT Amarius Mims, Georgia
Measurables: 6’7″, 340 lbs
The Fit: Day 1 Starting Right Tackle

The Steelers’ ongoing interest in Georgia players continues, and Mims is a prime candidate to fill one of the team’s most glaring needs. His combination of size, athleticism, and length makes him a tough matchup for any edge defender, and despite only 9 collegiate starts, he shows enough promise to justify a first-round grade. If Mims is still available at pick 20, the Steelers would be hard-pressed to pass him up.

ROUND 2: 51ST OVERALL

OC Zach Frazier, WVU
Measurables: 6’2″, 305 lbs
The Fit: Day 1 Starting Center

If Frazier is still on the board at pick 51, the Steelers would undoubtedly take him. This former wrestling champ would bring the toughness and athleticism needed for Pittsburgh’s offensive line, and his high football IQ positions him as a potential future Pro Bowler. If the Steelers land both Mims and Frazier early in the draft, it would be a massive win for their line.

ROUND 3: 84TH OVERALL

IDL Maason Smith, LSU
Measurables: 6’4″, 300 lbs
The Fit: Versatile DT/NT in Year 1

Smith was once considered a first-round prospect but saw his stock dip following a less-than-ideal 2023 campaign. Still, his raw athleticism and ability to line up at multiple positions on the defensive line make him a compelling option. While his 2023 stats may not stand out, his explosive potential makes him a strong Day 2 or early Day 3 target.

ROUND 4: 120TH OVERALL
CB Khyree Jackson, Oregon
Measurables: 6’4″, 203 lbs
The Fit: Developmental, Long Press-Man Corner

Jackson is an elite athlete with impressive physicality, particularly in coverage and run support. His biggest weaknesses are his quickness and change-of-direction skills, but his size and speed give him a solid foundation for development. Though not a Day 1 starter, Jackson has high upside with the right coaching and system.

ROUND 4: 121ST OVERALL

QB Joe Milton III, Tennessee
Measurables: 6’4″, 240 lbs
The Fit: Developmental QB with Raw Physical Talent

Milton stands out in a class of smaller quarterbacks due to his exceptional arm strength and size. However, he struggles with the finer details of the position. With the right coaching, his raw physical abilities could be molded into a potent asset. If he lands in Pittsburgh, Milton could be a potential steal in this draft.

ROUND 6: 196TH OVERALL

WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Georgia
Measurables: 6’2″, 195 lbs
The Fit: Developmental, Big Physical Outside Receiver

Rosemy-Jacksaint, another Georgia player, offers high upside as a vertical threat. He has strong hands and ball skills, but his route-running needs refinement. Still, his ability to make contested catches and work the deep ball could make him a valuable asset for the Steelers as he develops.

ROUND 7: 237TH OVERALL

ILB Michael Barrett, Michigan
Measurables: 6’0″, 239 lbs
The Fit: Developmental Coverage Linebacker

Barrett isn’t the most physically imposing linebacker, but he plays with high energy and athleticism. His ability to cover and contribute in pass defense makes him an intriguing option as a developmental linebacker. With the right role and some time to develop, Barrett could find success at the NFL level.
