When Will Nick Chubb Return to the Cleveland Browns?
At the conclusion of their 2024 training camp, the Cleveland Browns had to make difficult decisions to trim their roster down to 53 players. One notable player still on the sidelines is star running back Nick Chubb, who has been recovering from a serious knee injury sustained in Week 2 of the 2023 season. After suffering the injury during a Monday Night Football game in Pittsburgh, Chubb underwent two major knee surgeries, with the most recent one taking place in mid-November of 2023. Since then, he has been focused on rehabilitation.
When the roster cuts were made last month, the Browns placed Chubb on the active Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which means he is eligible to return to the team’s active roster in Week 5 of the 2024 season. But the question remains: Will he be ready?
At a press conference last Wednesday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked whether Chubb would be available to return after the upcoming Raiders game. His response was, “We’ll see when we get to next week. He’s doing well.” Known for his cautious approach when discussing player injuries, Stefanski’s response suggests that he isn’t yet certain about Chubb’s readiness to play. It’s likely that the coach is waiting for more information before committing to a timeline for Chubb’s return.
Mary Kay Cabot, a longtime Browns beat reporter for Cleveland.com, has speculated that Chubb could return around Week 7 or Week 8, potentially in time for the games against Cincinnati or Baltimore. However, just because Chubb is eligible to return doesn’t guarantee he will. The key indicator will be when he is able to fully participate in practice. His readiness will be determined by how he progresses in training, and until then, everything remains speculative.
